Strange creatures of the deep blue sea
Thursday, November 5th, 2009There are so many strange creatures that have been discovered int eh depths of the oceans in just the last few decades that it is quite obvious that there must be at least an equal number yet to be found. With our submersible technologies we are barely beginning to explore the deepest parts of the ocean to look for these strange creatures. Yet even as we search, for the first time, we are running a race against time as rising atmospheric CO2 is absorbed into the oceans raising their acidity and changing the basic chemical composition of the waters that house these strange and wonderful creatures. The waters at the oceans depths have remained largely unchanged for millions of years allowing creatures like the Nautilus to survive almost in an evolutionary stasis, giving us a unique look back into our planet’s past. That is changing now due to the millions of tons of pollutants that we are adding to the atmosphere and the oceans.
